MAYAGUEZ - Ignacio García llevó la bandera de Puerto Rico a
los cuartos de finales de la Copa Sultana.
García volvió a lucir dominante en la cancha central del
Complejo de Tenis del Recinto Universitario de Mayaguez y se impuso 6-1, 6-1 al
mexicano Patricio Nieto para llegar a la ronda de los últimos ocho en el evento
de Grado 2. El boricua se medirá al estadounidense y décimo preclasificado Noah
Schatcher, quien superó 6-4, 6-4 al quinto sembrado Gabriel Nemeth, de Brasil.
El otro boricua en la ronda de 16, Alejandro Rodríguez Vidal
dio una gran batalla pero quedó eliminado al perder 7-6 (5) y 7-6 (3) por el duodécimo
sembrado, Scott Fletcher. El estadounidense
se enfrentará en cuartos de final al primer sembrado Jorge Ortegón, de México,
quien venció al ruso Mark Chepurnoy (12), 6-3, 6-2.
El guatemalteco Christopher Fleming Ortiz logró la mayor
sorpresa de la jornada al vencer 6-2, 6-2 al segundo cabeza de serie Gabriel
Pilones, de Estados Unidos. Fleming Ortiz, decimoquinto sembrado, enfrentará el
jueves a Dennis Afanasev, de Estados Unidos, quien dejó en el camino a Sid
Nonarski, de Canadá, con un triunfo 6-3, 6-3.
Marcelo Rodríguez Mojica, de Panamá, continuó su paso
asombroso desde la ronda de cualificación al derrotar 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 a Karl
Poling, de Estados Unidos. El mexicano Juan Batalla, decimoitercer sembrado,
será su rival tras vencer 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 a Bradley Frye, otro estadounidense
fuera de competencia.
En la rama femenina, las británicas Ali Collins, Francesca
Jones, Eliz Maloney y Nandini Das, de India fueron las únicas sembradas que
avanzaron a la ronda de cuartos de final.
Collins, primera favorita, derrotó 6-1, 6-3 a Eva Nyikos, de
Austria y enfrentará en cuartos de final a Kate Paulus, de Estados Unidos,
quien superó 6-1, 6-0 a su compatriota
Catherine Xu. La tercera Jones, por su
parte, resistió el avance de la estadounidense Jacqueline Pelletier para
imponerse a 7-5, 7-6 (7) y jugará por el pase a semifinales ante Yulin Chen, de
China, vencedora 6-2, 6-1 d la mexicana Karen Alvarez.
La octava sembrada Maloney tuvo el día más cómodo de la
armada británica al arrollar 6-1, 6-0 a Alisa Mayo, de Estados Unidos, y se
medirá en cuartos a la canadiense River Hart, quien superó 7-5, 6-0 a Li
Jiawen.
Das, subcampeona del torneo en 2013 y cuarta sembrada,
adelantó con una victoria 6-2, 6-1 sobre Lilian Poling, de Estados Unidos. Su
partido de cuartos de final será ante Nami Otsuka, inscrita por Estados Unidos,
quien eliminó con un triunfo 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-1 sobre Yufei Long, de China.
La acción continúa el jueves desde las 8:00. Las semifinales
de sencillos y las finales de dobles serán el jueves, mientras que las finales
de ambas categorías serán el sábado en la mañana.
