MAYAGUEZ - El primer sembrado de varones, Jorge Ortegón y el
segundo, Gabriel Pilones, adelantaron a la tercera ronda de la Copa Sultana en
una jornada que vio caer a varios oreclasificados de ambas ramas en el evento
que se celebra en las Complejo de Tenis de la Universidad de Puerto Rico – Mayagüez.
Mientras, los puertorriqueños Ignacio García,
y Alejandro Rodríguez Vidal fueron los únicos jugadores del país anfitrión que
quedan con vida en los sencillos, tras la sorpresiva eliminación del séptimo
sembrado Sebastián Arcila.
El mexicano Ortegón tuvo complicaciones tempranas, pero
reenfocó para vencer 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 a Austin Johnson, de Estados Unidos. Pilones
tuvo una jornada más cómoda al vencer 6-0, 6-4 a Rodrigo Pascal, de México.
El ecuatoriano Carlos Macías, tercer sembrado, y el cuarto,
Marshall D’Agostine, de Estados Unidos, cayeron en la jornada de ayer, que
también eliminó a Arcila, al noveno sembrado Chase Burton y a la segunda en la
rama femenina, Sabrina Fabyeshev.
Macías fue derrotado 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 por Bradley Frye, de
Estados Unidos; D’Agostine cayó 7-6 (1) ante Patricio Nieto, de México; Arcila
cayó 6-3, 6-3 ante Karl Poling; Burton se fue 6-2, 7-6 ante el panameño Marcelo
Rodríguez y Faybyeshev 7-5, 7-5 ante Jiawen Li, de China.
Los boricuas García y Rodríguez-Vidal contribuyeron
a la eliminación de preclasificados al superar al decimocuarto, decimosexto y
octavo, respectivamente. García salió cómodo al vencer 6-1, 6-1 a Nicolás Manrique, de
Colombia y Rodríguez Vidal superó 6-1, 6-4 a Samuel Beren, de Estados Unidos.
Entre los cabezas de serie, se salvaron el quinto Gabriel
Nemeth, quien venció 6-2, 6-2 a Alfredo Macías, de Ecuador; el sexto Sid Donarski, de Canadá, quien superó
6-4, 7-5 a Sean Burnett, de Estados Unidos, el décimo Noah Schachter, (USA, 6-2,
6-1 sobre Guillermo López, de Puerto Rico); el undécimo Dennis Afanasev (USA,
6-3, 6-4 sobre Rafael Bejar, MEX) y el duodécimo Scott Fletcher (USA, 6-1, 7-5
sobre Michel-Alexandre Fortin, CAN).
También triunfaron el número 13 Juan Ignacio Batalla (MEX,
6-1, 7-5 sobre Fabián Soemario, de Indonesia) y el 15 Christopher Vleeming
(GUA, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 sobre Davey Roberts USA).
Puerto Rico también tiene representantes en los dobles
femeninos. Chantal Martínez Blanco y Paola Maza se impusieron 6-3, 6-4 a Sara
Samal y Catherine Xu, de Estados Unidos; Paola Bou y la mexicana Karen Alvarez
superaron 3-6, 6-4 (11-9) a Yulin Chen y Yufei Long, de China y Julieanne Bou y
la dominicana Laura Quesada derrotaron 7-5, 6-2 a Ariana Salgueiro, de Puerto
